"Disbelievers and Believers are Two Separate Nationalities: Nationality Based on Race and Country is Absurd

The statement:

(And people were but one community) in verse 19 means that the progeny of Sayyidna Adam (A.S) was essentially a single community of monotheists in the earlier stages of man's presence in the world. Shirk and Kufr were unknown as such. Then came up difference in the principle of pure monotheism that divided human beings in different nations and groups of people.

How long this period of a single community of believers last? Original sources of Islamic Tradition tell us that this situation prevailed up to the time of Sayyidna Nuh (Noah). It was during his time that Shirk and Kufr showed up and he was the one who had to confront it first. (Tafsir Mazhari)

Then, it is also obvious that there is a long period of time between Sayyidna Adam and Sayyidna Nuh (A.S), may peace be on them both. Human race had multiplied and population had spread out in the world. The presence of differences in colour, ethnicity and social life styles was natural. That people had spread themselves out in different regions would have certainly generated differences on the basis of country and homeland. Then, it is also possible that spoken languages may have become somewhat different. But, the Holy Qur'an did not allow these natural genealogical or tribal differences or those of color and country to become impediments to the grand design of one community. In fact, it did not declare the progeny of Sayyidna Adam (A.S) to be different nations and communities because of these differences. Instead, it gave them the status of one community.

Of course, when Kufr and Shirk spread out and posed a threat to 'Iman or true belief, Kafirs and Mushriks were declared to be a separate community of people as indicated in:

(later, they differed). Another verse of the Holy Qur'an:

(It is He who created you; yet there is among you a disbeliever and there is among you a believer - At-taghabun, 64:2) makes it more explicit. It tells that the thing that separates the progeny of Sayyidna Adam (A.S) created by Allah into different peoples is 'the deviation from 'Iman and Islam. Bonds of lineage or country do not make people separate. Bracketing human beings into different groups on the basis of language, homeland, color or race is ignorance dished out in the garb of enlightenment. It is new. But everything new is not necessarily true and wise. In fact, it might as well be the exact opposite of what is wise. Today, there are many educated people who have also fallen into the trap of this narrow concept of nationalism based on the factors enumerated above. Unfortunately, this approach towards ordering the social life of human beings is fraught with seeds of countless unseen disasters. May Allah keep Muslims safe from its evil effects".

"[Surah al-Hujurat,] Verse 13

O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female and made you into races and tribes, so that you may identify each other. Surely the noblest of you, in Allah's sight, is the one who is most pious of you. Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware. [13]

All of Mankind are the Children of 'Adam and Hawwa' (A.S)

In the preceding verses, six social evils in connection with human and Islamic rights were prohibited, and principles of good manners were laid down to be observed in social life. The current verse proceeds to set down the basis of an all-comprehensive and all-pervading principle of human equality. It has firmly laid the axe at the false and foolish notions of superiority, born of racial arrogance or national conceit. All men have been created from a single male ['Adam (A.S)] and a single female [Hawwa'] as human beings. Therefore, all people are the descendants of 'Adam and Hawwa' (A.S) and have been declared equal in the sight of Allah. No one is allowed to take pride nor to degrade others on the basis of pigment of his skin, the amount of wealth he possesses or by his rank or by his social status, descent or pedigree, but by his moral uprightness and the way he discharges his obligations to Allah and man. The entire human race is but one family. Division into nations, tribes and sub-tribes of all sizes, and races is meant only to give a better identification of one another.

Circumstances of Revelation

This verse was revealed on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah. When it was time for prayer, the Holy Prophet

Harith Ibn Hisham remarked: Could Muhammad not find anyone better than this black crow to sound the adhan in the Sacred Mosque! Abu Sufyan said: I do not wish to utter anything for fear that the master of the heavens will inform him. Thus Jibra'il (A.S) came down and informed the Holy Prophet

Analysis of Important Words in the Verse

The word

Shu`ub is the plural of Sha`b which refers to a large group of persons of the same origin, (like a nation). Then it consists of clans and tribes. The largest group in this arrangement is called sa`b, and the smallest is called 'ashirah. Abu Ruwaq says that the words Shu`ub and Sha`b refer to non-Arab nations whose lineage is not preserved, whilst qabail refers to Arabs whose lineage is well-preserved. The word asbat is used to refer to the children of Israel.

Lineal, National and Linguistic Division of Mankind: The Underlying Divine Wisdom is Identification

The Qur'an in this verse has made it clear that Allah has created all mankind from a single mother and a single father, and made them into a single brotherhood. But he has divided them into different tribes, nations, races, lineage and language-speakers/linguistic groups. The underlying Divine wisdom in such a division is mutual identification. For example, if there are two persons bearing the same name, they could be differentiated by family name. It can also show the near and remote relations. Their Shar`i rights can be fulfilled on the basis of near and distant lineage. It is incumbent to determine the near and remote agnate heirs when applying the law of succession or dividing the estate of a deceased. In short, reference to one's lineage for the purpose of identification is not deemed to be pride and conceit

"The Real Foundation of Nationalism and Collectivism

After having transmitted that, Ibn Kathir comments that people tend to take nationalism and common race as the cause of cohesion and union in social life. But, the reality lies in what has been said in a Hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari, that unity or disunity first germinates in souls, then it affects the bodies in this world. Souls that have experienced congruity and unity among them in 'azal (eternity) go on to become mutually connected and get molded into the form of a confraternity. As for those that did not have the experience of this mutual congruity and unity - in fact, remained separated there - they will remain separated here too

Nationalism - A Delusionary Notion

“Nationalism is a political ideology that involves a strong identification of a group of individuals with a nation.” (ref. Wikipedia). Before commenting upon this definition, I would first like to highlight upon a fact that a Nation in today’s terminology is a group of elements that are mutually coherent and significantly similar. A nation is not just a place in today’s world, but a means to take pride upon, to feel patriotic about and a means to feel the sense of unity and brotherhood. A nation is supposed to have the same ideas, same traditions and similar cultural activities. It is thought of as a joint to stick people together.

Nationalism consists of all the actions that give strength to this idea of nation as well as the activities and feelings that revolve around this idea. These feelings are so intense that anyone from outside the nation is treated with inexplicable discrimination. Politically, nationalism is a fallacy that states that anyone from within a certain area, usually a country, is from within the so called brethren while anyone from outside the territory is not from it and can be questioned for his/her actions.

What is more astonishing is the fact that this ideology is not just political unlike the definition earlier quoted from Wikipedia, it has gone to such extremes that it has become the means of division among all the stratus of the society. It is in fact a socio-political mindset. The social dilemma rooting from it needs no detailed explanation; a simple instance might be enough; virtually every one of us must have watched or heard some kind of news bulletin aired on our media waves in which words like Balochis, Sindhis, Punjabis and even so as to say Pakistanis are iterated time and again. All such words depict a feel of prejudice for a particular group of individuals from a particular part of the world.

Media being the most prominent proponent of such fake delusions insinuates within the masses this mindset which has become so strong that people now discriminate on mere facial complexion and origins (which were neither their choice nor decision in the first place!). This has gone to such unfathomable exceptions that we hear people killing each other in the name of race, province, country, origin and tribe. The disease of nationalism has thus carved its impact so deeply within our souls that we utter the oneness of Allah with our tongues but we act upon what nationalism teaches us.

What is most unbelievable and yet unfortunate is the fact that neither the Quran and nor the Sunnah of our beloved final Prophet, Hazrat Mohammad Sallalahu Alaiyhi Wasallam have anywhere stated or depicted such divisions. What led us to this mindset then?

As Muslims we express our belief in every word of the Quran but do we believe in every word of it with the conviction of the heart? The blatant reply to this enquiry is a NO! Have we ever thought about the fact that whenever Allah orders us, He uses the words: “O you who believe”, and whenever he mentions the disbelievers he uses the words: “Those who have disbelieved”? These words signify something that has to be perceived beyond just literary phrases. They highlight the fact that there are only 2 types of human creations. The superior and the foremost in the sight of Allah is the first type who believed in Him with all his attributes, powers, and abided by His orders and implemented them from his/her personal self to his/her surroundings. The second types of humans are those who have been showered with wrath in this life as well as the eternal after life, these are those who disbelieved and rejected the signs of Allah (swt).

All praise due to Allah (swt)! As Muslims we are among the superior and the foremost type of Human creations. Our Nation is Islam and our ideology is Iman (faith). Only Iman is the sole factor that binds us together in a tightly knit network of compatibility and co-ordination. As Allah mentioned in the Quran:

“Every Muslim is a brother to another Muslim.” (Surah Hujurat 10)

We are all equal and form firm brethren of Iman (faith). The territorial, racial, traditional and historical differences mean nothing in front of Allah and must not mean anything for us when judging others. We must only judge others with Aqeedah (beliefs) and not these superficial and apparent factors. We must not disregard anyone for his complexion, economic status and race because Allah clearly states in the Quran:

“Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of God is the one who is most deeply conscious of Him.” (Surah Hujurat 13)

Only Taqwa is the differentiating factor in front of Allah to judge Mankind. But this does not mean that the way humans are spread on the face of the earth with different skin colors, territories and identities is unorthodox or is not proven. Allah says these factors are a blessing but are only for identification:

“And (we) have made you into nations and tribes, so that you might come to know one another.” (Surah Hujurat 13)

Alas! Today our preferences have changed; our sight has shifted from the noble teachings of Islam to the man-made method of identification of the West. For many of us today our nation is the place we live in. My respected readers these borders we see in the global map today were not present in the days of Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaiyhi Wasallam). These have been created by the forces that intend to divide us and thus rule upon us to enforce their ideology and subsequently believe in their evil notions. I won’t delve into naming these forces here (everyone can make out easily which forces I am talking about!). But I can firmly say that these forces are working day in and day out to destroy the noble brethren of faith that Allah states in Quran.

The Ummah (brethren of faith) must unite today under the flag of oneness of Allah and other fundamentals of faith. We must defy the deity of ‘nation’ that has been made in front of us. We must stop judging others by the fundamentals of the idea of Nationalism (namely borders, language, race and colors) because by judging people with these standards we deny through our actions the orders of Allah (which were mentioned earlier). Verily, the idea of Nationalism is the worst of deities and is even more deadly than the idols of wood and stone that were carved by the people of Jahiliyyah!

May Allah save us from the ailment of nationalism and grant us the true sense of brotherhood. Ameen!

And Allah knows best!

Una poesia di Iqbal:

Iss Dour Mein Mai Aur Hai, Jaam Aur Hai Jam Aur
Saqi Ne Bina Ki Rawish-e-Lutf-o-Sitam Aur

[In this age the wine, the cup, even Jam is different
The cup‐bearer started different ways of grace and tyranny ]

Muslim Ne Bhi Tameer Kiya Apna Haram Aur
Tehzeeb Ke Azar Ne Tarshawaye Sanam Aur

[The Muslim also constructed a different haram of his own
The Azar (Father of Ibrahim (A.S.) of civilization made different idols of his own]

In Taza Khudaon Mein Bara Sub Se Watan Hai
Jo Pairhan Iss Ka Hai, Woh Mazhab Ka Kafan Hai

[The “Country”, it is the biggest among these new gods!
What is its shirt is the shroud of Deen (Religion)]

Hai Tark-e-Watan Sunnat-e-Mehboob (sallallaahu)-e-Elahi
De Tu Bhi Nabuwwat Ki Sadaqat Pe Gawahi

[Renouncing the country is the way of the God’s Beloved (PBUH)
You should also Testify to the Prophethood’s Truth by following in his footsteps]

Guftar-e-Siasat Mein Watan Aur Hi Kuch Hai
Irshad-e-Nabuwwat Mein Watan Aur Hi Kuch Hai

[In political parlance country is something different
In Prophet’s (S.A.W) command country is something different ]

Khali Hai Sadaqat Se Siasat To Issi Se
Kamzor Ka Ghar Hota Hai Gharat To Issi Se

[Politics have become bereft of sincerity is by this alone
The destruction of the home of the weak is by this alone ]

Aqwam Mein Makhlooq-e-Khuda Batti Hai Iss Se
Qoumiat-e-Islam Ki Jar Katti Hai Iss Se

[God’s creation is unjustly divided among nations by it
The Islamic concept of nationality is uprooted by it]

"Jews were victorious in that war not because of arms... But because of our own weaknesses.

The great champion of Arab cause Nasir ["Nasser"], was proudly proclaiming himself to be the inheritor of Pharaoh, while the Jews soldiers were reciting the old testament even in their trenches when free of fighting. Nasir's full attention was to win the war through 'Sawt al-Arab' [

], while the Jews were actively contemplating how to destroy the whole Arab Air Force in one single strike. The motivating force behind Arabs was 'Arab Nationalism' (not Islam), for Jews it was a matter of survival of their faith, race and community.

Iqbal has very beautifully stated:

"Muhammade Arabi se he Alame Arabi"

The Arab world exists because of their spiritual and emotional connection with Muhammade Arab, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam.

How easily this lesson was forgotten by the then Arab leaders!

Let me quote what was written, on the death of Nasir, in 'Aljamhooria', the date Octor 1st 1970.

"The prophet of this new age has passed away. Jamal Nasir died on the same day of the year, when Tajalli of 'Meraj' was granted to Muhammad Rasulullah saas, and He (Nasir) was invited to sidrat ul muntaha, to mend his broken heart, just like it was done for Prophet Muhammad Saas. Nasir has not died, he is on a journey to the skies like the Prophets and Quddisis".

"O, Jamal Abdul Nasir...O, Prophet of Arab nationalism, O, Prophet of Freedom, your name and your body reached the skies on the blessed night of 'Meraj'... You met Quddusis, and you became a part of those blessed souls who create life in the skies and on earth".

"O, The one the like of whom this world has never seen, steadfast in front of problems, and mending them whenever and in whatever way he wanted".

"New Kalima La ilaha Illallah-Nasir Habib ullah. Our ancestors used to sing your songs, you were like a dream to them, they waited for 4000 years for you, till you came"
.

These were just a few glimpses of the personality-cult culture in which Arabs were illogically but emotionally involved, while the Jews were preparing for the war with a cool mind.

Now let us see a few examples of how, in the emotional turmoil of Nationalism, the Arabs rebelled against Islam and the Nubuwwat of Muhammad sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam:

The Arab nation asked for help from Ilah, looked into the old traditions of Islam and Christinity, tried to take some comfort from the capitalist system, but to no avail... Then the Arab nation took heart, raised his head and fixed his eyes on the newly born 'communist Arab individual'.

"The traditions which has made an Arab young man as a useless guy, who bows his head before taqdir, and who can only recite La bola wa la quasars illa billah".

"The creation of a new Arab society demands the creation of a new Arab communist individual, who believes that ALLAH, RELIGION, CAPITALISM... In short all those traditions which ruled the Arabs, are to be put as Mummies in history museum"
.

Much more can be written, but I think these are sufficient reasons for an Arab Muslim nation to be put to the worst kind of defeat, not by the hands of Jews... But by our own hands, as we had gone far away from our life source, i.e., ISLAM".
