salam aleikum respected mufti,i wanna know if is permissible joining a boxing club in order to be always trained for difending oneself. i don't have the intention to participate in official matches or to do any agonistic activity, but whenever during the training in these places, often you have to fight, of course with glowes a gumshield and also a protection for the genitals,and during this fighting you give and recive punches in the face,so is permissible to participate also in this part of the training or should i avoid this part? barakallah feek

I would like to ask a related question: we know about the general prohibition of hitting someone in the face, but is this it related only to the training or punishing someone, or also in a real fighting situation?

I mean, if someone is being attacked for whatever reason, would it be permissible to punch the aggressor in the face for one's self-defence, if this seems to be the best reaction in that moment, or is it inconditionally impermissible and one should find some other point to hit?

Wa ‘alaykum as-Salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,


If you participate with the intention of Jihād and defending yourself, then there will not be any problem in joining the club. Since the intention is for religious war, it will be fine to practice the method of attacking in the face.

والمصارعة ليست ببدعة إلا للتلهي فتكره. (الدر المختار - (5 / 724)


. وأما ملاعبة الزوجة، والأمَةِ، وما هو من جنس الاستعداد للحرب - من رَكْضِ الخيل، ومُناضَلة السِّهام والمسايفة بالسيوف، والدَّرق، والمصارعة بالمغالبة، والمقاواة، والمسابقة بالأقدام، والدواب، ومطارحةِ الرِّماح، والقَنا، والرمي بالرصاص، والقنابر، والمدافع، وعَمَل المنجنيق، وتعلُّمِ ذلك، والمهارة فيه، لأجل إتقان الحروب، والفروسية - فإنه مباحٌ (الدرر المباحة للنحلاوي - (1 / 302)

المصارعة بدعة وهل تترخص للشبان قال رحمه الله تعالى ليست ببدعة وقد جاء الأثر فيها إلا أنه ينظر إن أراد بها التلهي يكره له ذلك ويمنع عنه وإن أراد تحصيل القوة ليقدر على المقاتلة مع الكفرة فإنه يجوز ويثاب عليه وهو كشرب المثلث إذا أراد التطرب والتلهي يمنع عنه ويزجر وإن كان مقاتلا وأراد به القوة والقدرة عليها جاز ذلك كذا في جواهر الفتاوى (الفتاوى الهندية - ط. دار الفكر - (5 / 352)

Wa ‘alaykum as-Salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

Yes, it is permissible to attack in the face if it is done in self defense or religions war.

ولا شك أن معنى ما ذكره المصنف في الصحيحين عن أبي هريرة عنه عليه الصلاة والسلام قال إذا ضرب أحدكم فليتق الوجه والمذاكير ولا شك أن هذا ليس مرادا على الإطلاق لأنا نقطع إن حال قيام الحرب مع الكفار لو توجه لأحد ضرب وجه من يبارزه أو هو في مقابلته حالة الحملة لا يكف عنه إذ يمتنع عليه بعد ذلك ويقتله فليس المراد إلا من يضرب صبرا في حد قتل أو غير قتل وما قيل في المنظومة والكافي إن الشافعي يخص الظهر لاستدلال الشارحين عليه بقوله عليه ». (مرقاة المفاتيح شرح مشكاة المصابيح - (11 / 148)
