Discussioni sull'Islam In nome di Allah, il Compassionevole, il Misericordioso Dì, "Egli, Allah è Unico, Allah è l'Assoluto. Non ha generato, non è stato generato e nessuno è eguale a Lui". (Corano 112, 1-4)

Respected scholar,I would like to ask what is the role of these hadiths in Islam.Isn't relying to Jewish and Christian customs and traditions a sign of weakness?I mean,if Muslims already have the Koran, the hadiths and the Sunna, why should they need other religions' traditions?
Thanks. |

Assalamu alaykum
The laws of Isrāīliyāt differs according to their categories. Scholars mention that there are three types of Isrāīliyāt:
1) Those known to be true because the revelation of Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم confirms them. This is definitely accepted because of the concurring of Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم.
2) Those known to be false, because the revelation to Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم rejects them. These are definitely rejected and preference is given to what Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم has said.
3) Those, the statuses of which are not known. We do not have any statement of Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم which either confirms or contradicts these narrations. For them, we do not say whether they are true or false. We rather maintain silence; not accepting nor rejecting such narrations. The narration of Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم mentioned in Sahīh al-Bukhāri refers to this category.
The reason why we cannot totally reject these narrations is because the unadulterated tawrāh and Injīl were from Allah Ta’ālā. We do not know whether the verdict/incident given in the Isrāīli narration is in conformity with what Allah Ta’ālā has mentioned in the Tawrāh or not. Hence, we rather maintain silence; without accepting or rejecting such narrations.
From the above it becomes apparent that Isrāīli narrations do not independently hold much weight. It has to be corroborated by the statement of Nabi صلي الله عليه وسلم, and it is this which will avert the weakness which you have alluded to.
And Allah Ta'ala knows best
